It was great to welcome Ian Kelly, Senior Parliamentary Assistant, to deliver this week’s Spotlight Talk.

Ian outlined his role, working for local MP Greg Smith and the variety of work and issues he is involved with. He particularly emphasised what an exciting and vibrant place Westminster is to be part of and the thrill of being at the centre of political policy making and change. Ian studied English, History and Psychology at A level, did a degree in History with a Masters in International Security and Diplomacy.

He recommended engaging with Think Tanks to demonstrate an interest in Politics. Many run competitions, some essay based, with prizes being work experience or internships. Ian emphasised that the key to a successful application to work with an MP is a close knowledge of their constituency. This includes knowing in detail about local issues and that this is more important than anything else when applying for roles.

Ian also supports Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South, who is the local MP for St Paul’s School who joined us for the talk today.
