Today’s talk was so much more than just sharing information about a job role. Whilst Ellie Gill, a Veterinary Nurse, gave us a fantastic insight into the highs and lows of life in busy veterinary practice, she also spoke about her own pathway. Ellie was a bright student, with strong A level grades about to study English at university and at the last minute decided that it wasn’t the right route for her, and she wanted to explore veterinary nursing. She sought advice from leading veterinary professionals and applied for an Apprenticeship, completing her qualification in two years whilst working and learning on the job.
It was interesting to hear how valuable skills such as teamwork, problem solving, empathy and patience are to employers and Ellie made the point that these skills are not taught at university, whereas apprentices pick them quickly whilst working. It takes real bravery and resilience to admit a decision or pathway isn’t right for you, and Ellie is a brilliant example of how important it is to always keep an open mind.
