What does the Tower Programme stand for?
- THINK independently
- OWN your learning pathway
- Develop ongoing WONDER
- EXTEND your knowledge and skills
- REACH beyond course requirements
Designed for all Year 12 students, the Tower Programme uses a powerful visual metaphor to represent personal growth, reflection, and achievement throughout sixth form. At the beginning of the Tower Programme, you will explore the electives on offer and develop a Moat, setting out your aims and your planning.
At regular intervals, you will complete a Drawbridge activity—a checkpoint where you take stock of how far you have come and prepare for the next stage of your Tower.
When you complete a project, you will have reached the Spire, where there is time to celebrate and share your Tower successes, reflect on what you have learnt and help others follow in your lofty footsteps.
The Moat
At the base of every great tower is a moat—your personal foundation. Here, students carve out their intentions, define their ambitions, and lay the groundwork for what they hope to achieve. It’s a moment for clarity and self-direction, giving purpose to everything that follows.
The Drawbridge
Progress takes courage and curiosity. The drawbridge symbolises key checkpoints along the journey, where students pause to reflect on their learning, make adjustments, and prepare to advance. It’s about building confidence, remaining connected to goals, and developing resilience.
The Spire
Reaching the Spire signifies accomplishment. It’s a time to celebrate projects completed, share insights gained, and inspire others by example. Students emerge with a stronger sense of identity, increased independence, and readiness for whatever lies ahead.
Why It Matters – This metaphorical framework aligns with our core endeavour to ensure that Thornton is an environment where girls thrive. The Tower Programme empowers students to explore new options, take ownership of their learning, and unlock experiences beyond the curriculum. The Tower Programme nurtures leadership, self-reflection, and ambition—setting the stage for a transformative sixth form experience and ensuring students thrive both academically and personally.
