Alumnae

Welcome to our Alumnae Page, a dedicated space for reconnecting, reminiscing and celebrating the incredible achievements of our alumnae community.

As the Head Teacher of Thornton College, I am immensely proud to lead such a vibrant and diverse community. Our students, ranging from the age of 3 to 19, continually inspire us with their curiosity, resilience, and achievements. It is a privilege to witness their growth and to be part of a team that nurtures their potential. The dedication of our staff and the enthusiasm of our students make Thornton a truly special place and we are delighted to maintain strong relationships with our alumnae, who continue to be an integral part of our community.

This platform is designed to keep you informed about the latest news, events, and opportunities to engage with your fellow alumnae and the broader community. Whether you are looking to reconnect with old friends, network with professionals, or give back to the next generation of students, this is your home.

Thank you for being a part of our journey and for continuing to shape the future.

The Old Thorntonians Association

The Old Thorntonians Association was founded for former students, their families and staff and is an association that has continued to grow, with a thriving community across the globe.

Jane Holliday (Haseldine) 1976-1984, is the current Chair of the OTA. Jane is a very familiar face at Thornton having returned to the school to ‘help out’ in 2001 and staying as a member of staff for over 20 years, covering several roles over that time, culminating in her role as School Receptionist.

Jane’s father was school governor for over 30 years and her two sisters Kate and Sarah also attended Thornton. It’s fair to say the family has a strong association with the school.

Further details on how to register to be a member of the Old Thorntonians Association please email Rachael Loughnane RLoughnane@thorntoncollege.com – Thornton’s alumnae coordinator.

Funding Opportunities

If you are interested in sponsoring or making a donation to Thornton College or perhaps considering leaving a Legacy please contact RLoughnane@thorntoncollege.com for further information.  There are lots of ways to support Thornton College and we are always keen to stay in touch and work with former students.

The Association relies on donations from Old Thorntonians to pay for the organisation of events. A Life Subscription offers the most cost effective membership at just £100. Annual Subscriptions are available from £10.

Alumnae Ambassadors

We are particularly keen to hear from former students who live in different regions of the world as we would like volunteers to be our Alumnae Ambassadors in their countries to organise and host alumni events.  If you are interested in finding out more please contact Mrs Rachael Loughnane via email, RLoughnane@thorntoncollege.com.

Careers Programme and Mentorship

We love our alumnae to share their career journeys with our current students! This could be at one of our Spotlight Talks on a Wednesday morning. This is a 20 minute slot, on Zoom, and you will be joined by all our students from Years 9-13 virtually. These presentations provide a taster of a whole range of different careers and pathways. We also host Alumnae Careers Networking Events, when we welcome Alumnae back to a dinner where they can reconnect with other old girls, and also talk informally to our sixth formers about their job roles. Additionally, several of our fantastic Alumnae  support our careers programme by attending STEM workshops and other events we hold throughout the year. If you would like to be part of our careers provision in any way, please email Jo Scott, our Head of Careers, at jscott@thorntoncollege.com.

There is more information about our careers programme here.

Digital Archive

With our alumnae living all over the world, both near and far, it is important memories and items of Thornton’s rich history are accessible to all.

Thornton now has an excellent digital archive available here. The archives are truly fascinating, an Aladdin’s Cave of history and memories. As the passage of time moves on, the archives will never be completed as new items are added on an ongoing basis. Today’s students and future generations will look for ‘their’ archives in years to come.

Enjoy looking through the archives and hopefully finding yourself in some of the photographs or newsletters.

Michaelmas Term 2025/26 - Letter 1

Dear Alumnae

As we reach the end of a vibrant first half term, we are delighted to share the many moments of achievement, creativity, and community spirit that have filled these weeks at Thornton. From record-breaking academic results and inspiring careers events to sporting triumphs and artistic excellence, this term has been a celebration of all that makes our school so special.

 Academic Excellence and Innovation

We began the year by celebrating outstanding GCSE and A-Level results, with students securing places at leading universities to study a wide range of subjects. Across the school, curiosity and ambition have flourished: students launched into new HPQ and EPQ projects, explored ethical AI in assemblies, and engaged in national competitions such as the Senior Maths Challenge and Maths Olympiad.

Our Spotlight Careers Programme featured inspiring speakers, including professionals from the National Theatre and Bedford Hospital, while Year 10 Business students gained real-world insights during a visit to John Lewis’ state-of-the-art distribution centre. Sixth Form students also enjoyed a dynamic Networking Evening with alumnae, exploring pathways in law, engineering, digital marketing, and more.

Creative Arts and Performing Arts

Creativity has been at the heart of school life this term. Thornton hosted the MK Lit Fest, welcoming authors and local schools for a day of literary celebration that even featured on BBC Look East. Preparations for our much-anticipated production of Frozen are well underway, promising a spectacular performance in the new year.

Our students excelled in the Midlands Region ISA Art Competition, achieving first place in three categories and multiple Highly Commended awards. Winning pieces will be showcased in a virtual gallery after half term—a testament to the talent and imagination of our community.

Community Spirit and Global Connections

Assemblies this term have explored themes of courage, caring for creation, mental health, and cultural celebration, reinforcing the values that unite us. The launch of the CURIO Programme has sparked curiosity and debate across the school, while events such as Family Fast Day and our Harvest Festival have highlighted the importance of service and gratitude. Generous donations to the Milton Keynes Foodbank and fundraising for CAFOD reflect the compassion at the heart of Thornton life.

Looking beyond our gates, we continue to strengthen global ties as part of the Jesus and Mary family. During the half-term break, I represented Thornton at the General Chapter in Rome—a privilege that underscores our commitment to shared mission and international collaboration.

Sporting Success

Our athletes have enjoyed a phenomenal start to the year. Hockey teams across all age groups have secured impressive victories, while our cross-country runners achieved podium finishes in regional competitions. In gymnastics, a Year 8 student earned national and British silver medals, and a Year 4 gymnast was selected for the South of England elite squad. Swimming success continued at the ISA Midlands Tournament, with strong performances and multiple podium finishes. Equestrian achievements also shone brightly, with qualification for the National Championships.

Looking Ahead

As we pause for a well-earned break, plans are already underway for A Very Thornton Christmas—a magical new event that will bring our community together in festive celebration. We look forward to sharing more details soon and hope to see many of you there.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and connection to Thornton. Your involvement enriches our community and inspires our students every day.

Wishing you a restful and joyful half-term break.

With warmest regards,
Dr Louise Shaw

Michaelmas Term 2025/26 - Letter 2

Dear Alumnae

As the term draws to a close, we are delighted to share highlights from a half term rich in accreditation, creativity, and community spirit. From a major UNICEF milestone to a concert hall filled with nearly two hundred voices, these weeks have reflected the best of Thornton life.

Awards and Accreditation

We are proud to announce that Thornton has been accredited with the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award – Silver. Following a rigorous virtual accreditation, assessors recognised how children’s rights are not only taught but actively lived across our community—a testament to our culture of student voice and inclusion.

Building on our sustainability work, Thornton also achieved the Bronze Woodland Trust Award within the Green Tree Schools scheme, recognising hands‑on environmental action across the school.

Music and Performing Arts

This year’s Christmas Concert brought our community together in joyful celebration, with almost 200 students from Years 5–13 performing—an uplifting showcase of musicianship and teamwork to usher in the season.

Careers, Enrichment and Digital Literacy

Our Spotlight programme continued to open doors, including a session on RAF careers highlighting diverse roles, apprenticeships, and scholarship pathways.

Students also deepened their understanding of online responsibility through a Senior “Think before you click” AI and online safety programme, reflecting our commitment to digital citizenship. Beyond the classroom, enrichment included a hands‑on Mock Trial through our Law programme and cross‑phase creative projects such as a visit from the Mobile Scrapstore for design and upcycling.

Sport and Team Spirit

Sport has remained a vibrant part of school life, with energetic fixtures across the half term and strong performances from teams at multiple age groups—another reminder of the determination and camaraderie that characterise Thornton sport.

Community and Festive Gatherings

The countdown to A Very Thornton Christmas has been filled with excitement—Santa’s woodland grotto, creative workshops, and our Christmas Café have captured imaginations across the community, with tickets quickly snapped up. Our Houses have also continued to bring the school together through creative fundraising, including a wonderfully warm “Comfy & Cosy” themed day to support chosen charities.

As we look ahead to the festivities and a well‑earned rest, we remain grateful for the continued encouragement of our alumnae community.

perfectly with our Excellent ISI inspection report and Outstanding CSI inspection, reinforcing our commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience.

Michaelmas Term 2024/25 - Letter 2

Dear Alumnae,

As we close the second half of the Michaelmas term, we are thrilled to share the wonderful accomplishments and events that have filled this term with energy, community spirit, and outstanding student achievements. We hope you enjoy this look back at the past few weeks at Thornton, and that you feel proud of all that our current students are achieving in the classroom, on stage, and in the wider community.

Community Engagement & Charitable Initiatives

This term, we were moved by the generosity of our school community. The ‘Bags of Kindness’ project, which involved collecting small Christmas gifts for those in need within the Northampton Diocese, was a resounding success. Our community contributed items for both the elderly and young, and we are so grateful for the kindness shown.

Our final House fundraising event of the term, themed “Cosy and Christmas,” took place and was a resounding success. Students and staff embraced the festive spirit, coming dressed as Christmas characters or simply in cozy attire, to raise funds for the chosen House Charity—the Air Ambulance Service. This vital charity provides life-saving support, and we look forward to supporting them throughout the year.

Year 6 and Year 7 School Highlights

The Prep School enjoyed an exciting and creative workshop led by Waddesdon Manor on the theme of ‘Fairy Tales.’ The girls had a fantastic time engaging in art activities and creating vegetables for the garden in which Jack’s giant beanstalk would grow. Their artwork was proudly displayed as part of the Manor’s Christmas exhibition, a wonderful way to showcase their creativity.

In another special event, Year 6 and 7 students were given the unique opportunity to receive tuition in Bridge from world champion Mrs. Smith. Bridge, known for enhancing strategic thinking, memory, and social skills, sparked the girls’ interest.

Careers Programme

Our Sixth Form Health and Social Care students were privileged to hear from Julie Goodman, Head of Patient and Family Experience at Milton Keynes Hospital. Julie shared valuable insights into roles within the NHS and her work within the patient experience department.

Year 12 and Year 10 Politics students had the chance to visit Milton Keynes Magistrates Court, learning about the legal process and observing live cases. They were also able to question a JP about their role, gaining a deeper understanding of the judicial system.

In a career-focused Spotlight session, Mr. Cook, a civil servant, joined us remotely to discuss the incredible opportunities within the civil service, further enriching our students’ understanding of various career paths.

Student Voice & Leadership

Our Equalities Committee hosted a powerful exhibition for Black History Month, titled ‘Reclaiming the Narrative.’ The exhibition showcased inspirational individuals and fostered an insightful discussion within the Thornton community.

The Prep and Senior School Eco Committees continued to lead impressive sustainability initiatives, discussing projects and ideas to make the most of Thornton’s 25-acre campus. Their passion and dedication are truly inspiring, and we are proud of the leadership they’re showing in environmental matters.

Our School Councils also met to discuss important issues, with Mr. Salter from Harrisons and Mr. Grant, our Catering Manager, joining the conversation to share their expertise and advice.

International Partnership with The Visitation Academy

This term, we launched a new partnership with The Visitation Academy, an all-girls Catholic school in St Louis, USA. Our Year 9 students had the opportunity to meet their American counterparts online, and we are excited about the prospect of future exchange opportunities and continued collaboration between students and staff from both schools.

Musical Performances & Celebrations

We were treated to stunning musical performances this term. Our solo musical concert was a beautiful showcase of our students’ talent, and the Christmas concert was a true highlight, featuring contributions from all year groups. The dedication and hard work of our students and staff were evident, and it was a joy to celebrate such remarkable talent.

The Prep Nativities were a particularly special occasion, with Early Years and Years 1-4 putting on performances that wowed parents and teachers alike. The courage and talent displayed by our youngest students left everyone in the audience beaming with pride.

Debates & Student Achievements

Our students participated in a lively debate against St Paul’s on two thought-provoking motions: ‘This House believes the UK needs to do more to promote and protect freedom of speech’ and ‘This House believes capitalism is a force for good.’ The debates, along with a motivational video from Callum Anderson, MP for Buckingham and Bletchley, highlighted the intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills of our students.

This term, we also saw outstanding achievements in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls. Several Sixth Form and Year 11 students received their awards, having successfully completed a challenging 2.5-hour exam with complex problems. We are incredibly proud of their achievements!

Our sporting teams continued to shine, with the Intermediate Cross Country team qualifying for the Regional Final and our swimmers securing spots in the Independent Schools Association’s National Swimming Final. We also celebrated Tayah-Mya from Year 7, who was selected for the Great Britain Tumbling Performance Pathway Squad for 2025!

Across classrooms, sports fields, theatres, and beyond, our students have embraced every opportunity with joy, courage, and ambition.

Community Engagement & Charitable Initiatives

Our community spirit has flourished this term. The Friends of Thornton have been instrumental in enriching school life — from donating woodwork equipment to EYFS to preparing for the much-anticipated Summer Fête and Dog Show. Thank you too to the Old Thorntonians Association for their support in hosting a heartwarming Alumnae Cream Tea, where past students reconnected and shared memories.

Our students have continued to show compassion and initiative. The Great Cereal Topple, led by Year 4, saw an impressive amount of cereal boxes donated to the Milton Keynes Food Bank, creating a spectacular domino display. Meanwhile, our House Captains’ 1980s-themed fundraiser raised nearly £600 for charity — a joyful day that united the whole school in colour, music, and generosity.

Our Key Stage three and Four explored anti-bullying themes in assemblies, while Year 9 Faith Ambassadors continued their international dialogue with peers at the Visitation Academy in St Louis, USA.

This term has offered joyful glimpses of the future — in the confident voices of our youngest students, the thoughtful leadership of our Sixth Form, and the global connections that continue to grow. As one alumna recently said during our cream tea, “Thornton just has it.” While hard to define, that “it” — the warmth, the spirit, the sense of belonging — is felt by all who pass through our gates.

We thank you, our alumnae, for being part of that spirit.

With warmest regards,
