We are fortunate to have built fantastic links with Oxford Brookes University, and as part of their PHSE programme, the Year 11s had a bespoke talk on Higher Education. Stuents learnt that there are 50,000 subjects that you can study at university, which include niche degrees such as Baking Technology, Circus and Physical Theatre and Surf Science alongside the more traditional courses!
Immy explained the difference between BA, BSc and BEng degrees and also Foundation courses, which allow students to access degrees for which they may not meet the entry requirements. We discussed the benefits of a work placement year and spending a semester abroad at partner universities. Higher education allows students to develop many transferrable skills and connect with professionals through networking. Immy highlighted the difference in size of universities; for example the University of Manchester has 40,485 students and Royal Holloway has 3,000 students. Oxford Brookes has 16,900.
Suggested skills for students to start building now include budgeting and in their PHSE lessons. Year 11 students explore this later in the academic year. This was a great introduction to life at university, different courses and how to transition from school to university.
