Spotlight Seminar: Buckingham University

Posted: 25th June 2025

A number of Year 12s are interested in applying to study Law at Buckingham University and we were delighted to provide a bespoke seminar with two lecturers from the Faculty. This gave our students the unique opportunity to find out more about the course, solicitor and barrister pathways and the LLM International and Commercial Law programme that Buckingham offer.

Law is very competitive and James Slater emphasised the high academic requirements required, for the Bar in particular, with Chambers looking at candidates with eleven 9s at GCSE and four A*s at A level. Our students asked about the benefits of studying at Buckingham and were impressed by the blended approach offered, with a strong emphasis on providing work experience and a focus on employability skills.

Julie O’Shea told us about the practical modules offered with the Citizens Advice Bureau and work experience opportunities with EMW. Teaching is delivered in small tutorial groups and individual support and mentoring is given with regards to careers and work experience. This blended approach during the two year undergraduate course is different to other universities and aims to really prepare students for the work place. James’ response to ‘What makes you the right candidate for Law?’ included strong academic results, listening and communication and also commercial awareness. He advised students to read publications such as the FT and Economist and engage with political situations thinking about the impact on business.

We are very grateful to James and Julie for their guidance.
