Lana Hughes has had an inspiring journey to her role as Captain in the Army. There is one skill she recommends above all others and that is determination. She did not complete her A levels at school and left to work in supermarkets, gyms and insurance, with no idea what she wanted to do.
Having not enjoyed PE at school, she got into fitness, bought a horse and in her spare time joined the Army Reserves. She absolutely loved it, went back to college to take two A levels and applied for the Officer Training Programme. Through sheer determination, she was given a final Board (interview) and accepted onto the programme at Sandhurst. This was a fantastic experience and it was great to hear of the culturally diverse group of people she met there.
No day is the same for Lana in her current job in people management …. she could be instructing on the shooting range, writing reports or planning the next mountaineering exercise. She shared a number of fabulous photographs with students, including her riding Falkland, the horse who was ridden by Princess Anne at the King’s Coronation!
