Spotlight Careers: Acting/Musical Theatre

Posted: 27th February 2025

We were thrilled to be joined by Jasmine Sakyiama for this week’s Spotlight Talk. Jasmine is a Thornton Old Girl and is currently appearing in Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of “Oliver” in the West End.

Jasmine’s first big break was in “School of Rock” in London, when she was in Year 6 at Thornton. She had five auditions before being given her role and talked about the challenges of balancing academic work with performances. She went on to appear in “A Little Princess”, “Bugsy Malone” and “Midnight Gang”. Jasmine stressed the importance of networking and how gaining parts is often down to who you know rather than what you know. Very often it is building relationships with casting directors that leads to you being offered auditions for the next role. She talked about the need to be resilient, passionate and how being a bit nervous before performing is a good thing!

In “Oliver” Jasmine is an On Stage Swing, and she explained that this means she has to cover a range of different parts. “Les Miserables” is on at the theatre next door and Jasmine’s dream is to play Eponine.

We wish her so much luck and are so proud of her. Hopefully her tips will be useful for the cast for our very own production of “Legally Blonde” later this week!
