At Thornton College, we are proud of our long and distinguished history. From our earliest mention in the Domesday Book in 1086 to the transformation of our Manor House in the 19th century, we have stood as a witness to centuries of change. Since our founding as a Catholic girls’ school in 1917 by the Sisters of Jesus and Mary, we have been guided by a deep commitment to excellence, compassion, and personal growth. Each milestone marks a chapter in our story, shaped by generations of students, staff, and families. Below is a timeline of key moments that reflect our evolution and enduring values.
Our History
History Timeline
The Manor of Thornton is recorded in the Domesday Book, marking its existence as a significant estate in Buckinghamshire.
John Chastillon, lord of the manor, is granted a licence to maintain an oratory at Thornton. The manor house is developed into a late medieval courtyard residence.
The estate passes to John Barton, who establishes two chantries. His alabaster effigy remains in the parish church adjacent to the manor.
The Tyrell family owns the manor for over 250 years, followed by the Cotton family in 1755 and the Sheppard family in 1774. Architectural and cultural influences from these families remain evident in the building’s design.
Richard Cavendish, son of the Earl of Waterpark, commissions architect John Tarring to redesign the manor in Tudor Gothic style. This includes the construction of the grand staircase, heraldic stained glass windows, and vaulted ceilings.
The manor and surrounding estate are sold, ending the Cavendish family’s ownership.
The Sisters of Jesus and Mary purchase the manor and establish Thornton College, a girls’ school rooted in the mission of St Claudine Thévenet. Initially, the Sisters serve as the sole staff, managing all aspects of school life.
A new wing dedicated to Pre-Prep education is inaugurated, marking the beginning of modern expansion.
A purpose-built studio for creative and performing arts is opened, enhancing the school’s arts curriculum.
An award-winning facility housing science laboratories and Prep classrooms is completed.
The Sixth Form is revitalised with modern classrooms and the Friends Café, located within the main Manor House.
The school grounds are expanded to include an Eco Park, fire pit, den-building zone, and dipping pond, supporting outdoor learning.
The Villa is converted into a Year 13 boarding house, and ICT suites are refurbished, continuing the College’s commitment to innovation and growth.
