We were lucky to be joined by Old Thorntonian Emma Evans, who has recently started her first job in the Charity Sector.
Emma’s dream when she was in Year 11 at Thornton was to have a fulfilling career in international development which would genuinely impact people’s lives for the better. She spoke about the role that Thornton played in nurturing her passions, such as introducing the MUN, and the help she had in taking her subjects outside the classroom.
Universities and employers really value super-curricular activities and this is something we are committed to supporting students with in our Sixth Form provision. Emma did work experience with a local MP and volunteered with an international aid pressure group, alongside completing an EPQ.
At Durham University she did work experience with CAFOD and interviewed our very own Sister Brenda for her dissertation on Christian Missionaries and International Development! When doing her Masters in Development Studies, she volunteered for Sussex Beacon, a charity giving specialist care and support for people living with HIV. This informed her thesis on Catholic Faith Organisations and their role in HIV in Zambia.
Emma talked about the challenges of job applications in the Charity Sector and the need to be resilient, but was thrilled to start working with WaterAid in October. Her role as a Support Care Advisor is entry level, with the potential to grow and develop within a fantastic organisation.
We are full of admiration for Emma, who spoke about her love of the role and charity, how much she is learning, how supported and fulfilled she is and has the potential to achieve her dream of genuinely changing people’s lives.
