Last week Dr Shaw and Mrs Walker met with Maureen and Christine from the Wing Branch of the Women’s Institute who shared fabulous committee meeting minutes and accounts from the period of the Second World War. We learnt about the Wing WI efforts to collect cigarettes and soap for soldiers in France and Holland, the distribution of seeds for ‘Dig for Britain’, air raid shelter training, changing the times of meetings due to blackouts and efforts to raise funds to build a spitfire!
All of this information has now been digitalised as part of the ‘Their Finest Hour’ project with the University of Oxford. This is a national project with the aim to digitalise stories and objects from the Second World War in an attempt to ensure that future generations have access to this knowledge and learning and that precious stories are not lost!
Thornton is holding a digital collection day on Saturday 16th September from 10 a.m. If you have Second World War objects or stories then please do visit us on Saturday where we will have a team of volunteers to help collect and upload information and images to help preserve memories for future generations!
