Broadening Horizons

At Thornton College, our international focus reflects both our foundation as a Jesus and Mary school and our commitment to nurturing global perspectives. Rooted in the values of compassion and respect, this cultural ethos inspires students to partake in extracurricular programs – from Model United Nations, international school trips and Japanese lessons, these initiatives embody our pursuit of broadening horizons, preparing students to thrive in an interconnected, multicultural world.

Japanese Lessons

The Japanese lessons for pre-prep girls at Thornton College are a wonderful introduction to the vibrant culture and traditions of Japan. Through hands-on activities, our youngest students can develop an understanding of new cultures. This includes an introduction to making sushi, inspiring an interest in new cuisine and tastes from around the world. This also includes the practice of Japanese nursery rhymes, immersing themselves in the language’s rhythm and melodies in a fun and familiar way. Additionally, the girls enjoy making origami hats, an activity which develops their creativity while introducing them to Japan’s traditional paper-folding art. These lessons are designed to inspire curiosity and appreciation for new and different cultures, blending learning with creativity and enjoyment.

MUN

At Thornton College, Model United Nations (MUN) is a fantastic program which allows students learn about current global issues and how countries can work together to solve them. Students take on the role of delegates from different nations, discussing and debating international challenges. Through MUN, they build the important skills of public speaking and teamwork while gaining an understanding of different cultures and perspectives. It’s a great way to connect with Thornton’s focus on embracing diversity and preparing students to engage with the wider world.

Global Ambassadors Visit Madrid

Thornton’s Global Ambassadors, sixth form students Mia L and Yasmine O, had the incredible opportunity to visit a Jesus and Mary College in Madrid, immersing themselves in the culture and values shared by our global community. This experience not only allowed them to explore the rich heritage and traditions of the Spanish college but also to connect with peers who share the same ethos. Building meaningful relationships and strengthening a sense of unity, the trip was a truly enriching international experience, broadening horizons while reinforcing the shared foundation of compassion and faith that binds our schools together.

Mia also assembled a fantastic Jesus and Mary international choir with students from several schools across our global community singing Coldplay’s Viva La Vida.

Virtual debate with Lebanon

Thornton students recently participated in an exciting virtual debate with a Jesus and Mary school in Lebanon, connecting with peers from a different part of the world to discuss thought-provoking topics. The debate fostered a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect, allowing the girls to share perspectives and ideas while honing their communication skills. This enriching experience not only strengthened international bridges but also deepened their appreciation for cultural diversity within the shared Jesus and Mary community.

Thornton College is proud of our ongoing collaboration with a J&M school in Lebanon. We are delighted to have been featured in a book produced by JM Rabweh school in Cornet Chehwan, Lebanon, celebrating the Jesus and Mary Community.

This partnership highlights our commitment to building bridges and the shared values of Jesus and Mary, across international borders.

International Connection with Visitation Academy, St. Louis

One of our most exciting international partnerships is with the Visitation Academy in St. Louis, USA. This cross-continental collaboration has brought students together across different year groups and subjects, creating valuable opportunities for shared learning and cultural exchange.

A group of eleven Year 9 students at Thornton meet via Zoom with their peers at Visitation Academy each half term to discuss ideas and initiatives focused on promoting well-being in both schools. These sessions are a powerful example of how students can lead and inspire change through international dialogue and shared values.

Our collaboration has also extended into the creative arts, with joint projects in Art providing a wonderful platform for expression and connection. We are excited to continue developing this relationship, expanding opportunities for collaboration and friendship across the globe.

On Thursday 6th June 2025, we were delighted to host students and staff from Visitation Academy, who visited our school as part of a growing partnership with our Year 9 students. Having connected virtually over recent months, the in-person visit offered a rich and meaningful opportunity to deepen friendships and share experiences.

The day included a ‘getting to know you’ session, a vibrant performance of School of Pop by our Year 5 and 6 pupils, and lessons across a range of subjects including English, Music, Drama, and Science. A highlight was watching our Early Years children confidently speak in Japanese.

It was a beautiful day of community, joy and connection – a reminder of the value of global friendships and shared faith.

In the Languages Department, students in Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 have have recently had an introduction to Latin.

They have been learning about the geographical and historical origins of the language, its significance to other languages, including English, and the Latin alphabet.  They have also been learning about how it is good for the brain and why it is still so relevant to learn in 2025.

International School Award

In April 2024 Thornton received a Foundation level British Council School Award, in recognition of our work to bring the world into the classroom

On announcing the award, Shannon West, Head of UK Schools for the British Council, said: “We are delighted and proud that Thornton College is committed to developing a whole school approach to embedding and celebrating international work. The dedication from everyone is enriching education and supporting globally aware young people and the development of key skills.”

In further recognition of Thornton’s expanding initiatives on globalism within the classroom, the school subsequently received the Intermediate level British School Council Award in January 2025.
