Curriculum intent

Our senior school curriculum is designed to empower every student to think independently, act responsibly and thrive in a rapidly changing world. We aim to nurture curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, encouraging students to question, debate and develop a confident voice.

Students build strong knowledge across a broad range of subjects while developing the values, skills and digital literacy needed to contribute positively to society and navigate an interconnected global landscape.

We provide a dynamic and inclusive curriculum with clear progression, rich co-curricular opportunities, and tailored support for all learners, ensuring every student can achieve her potential and move successfully into further education and adult life. Our commitment to equal opportunities ensures that every student is supported appropriately, with tailored provision for different academic needs. Progression through each stage is carefully planned, with strong links to further education, clear pathways for development, and meaningful assessment and reporting that supports students and keeps parents informed.

GCSE programme

Our GCSE programme combines breadth, ambition and flexibility, giving every student the opportunity to shape a pathway that reflects her interests, strengths and future aspirations. Alongside a strong core curriculum in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Religious Studies, Science, Core PE and PSHEE, students select from an exciting range of additional subjects, allowing them to personalise their learning and build a firm foundation for post-16 study and beyond.

Students can choose up to four option subjects – including those within our Electives Pathways Programme – with Separate Sciences offered as one of these choices. Options include:

  • Art
  • Business Studies
  • Citizenship Studies (Politics)
  • Computer Science
  • Drama
  • Design & Technology
  • Geography
  • History
  • Music
  • Photography
  • Physical Education
  • Psychology
  • Separate Sciences

Science at Thornton is offered through two pathways, both supported by the AQA suite. Students may follow the Combined Science route, leading to two GCSEs, or choose Separate Sciences in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, resulting in three GCSEs. Both pathways are assessed at the end of Year 11 and are rooted in hands-on practical experience, with learning driven by experimentation and investigation.

Through a supportive consultation process with students, parents and teachers, we ensure each student selects the combination of subjects that will enable her to achieve her full potential.

Our GCSE programme is designed to be academically robust, engaging and forward-looking – empowering students to think critically, work independently and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.

Further information relating to each course can be found in the curriculum booklet.

Electives pathways

Our Electives Programme is designed to enrich the GCSE experience by helping students develop the essential skills they will need for further study, employment and life beyond school. Alongside their chosen GCSE subjects, students can select an Elective as one of the four options, giving them dedicated time each week to broaden their learning in a structured, future focused way.

Electives offer a balance of taught sessions and supervised independent study, allowing students to explore interests more deeply while strengthening transferable skills such as critical thinking, communication, independence, problem-solving and self management. These are the 21st century skills highly valued by employers and increasingly recognised as crucial to success in any professional pathway.

Current Electives include:

  • Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) – developing research, analysis and extended writing skills.
  • Youth STEMM Award – building practical scientific, technological and leadership skills.
  • Volunteering with Young Children – developing responsibility, communication and social awareness.

The programme is flexible, with the option to move to supervised study or, alternatively, to pursue a full set of 10 GCSEs where appropriate.

Further information relating to each course can be found in the curriculum booklet.
