The following scholarships categories may be awarded at Sixth Form. All scholarships are at the discretion of the Head of Thornton College and are dependent on the candidates meeting all the criteria for Sixth Form awards, including a sufficiently high standard academically, behaviourally and in terms of application to work and references:
Sixth Form Academic Achievement Scholarship for Internal Candidates. Academic Scholarships (normally three) may be awarded by the Head following the results of the GCSE examinations. This scholarship is worth a remission of up to 30% of day fees or 30% of full/weekly boarding fees subject to availability of boarding rooms.
Sixth Form Academic Achievement Scholarship for External Candidates. This is awarded by the Head following publication of GCSE results. This scholarship is worth a remission of up to 30% of day fees or 30% of full/weekly boarding fees subject to availability of boarding rooms.
Sixth Form Open Scholarship (all-rounder) (internal or external candidates). This award is to a student who is likely to contribute exceptionally to the overall life of the Sixth Form. The recipient is likely to be good academically, with major co-curricular strengths.
Sixth Form Open Academic Boarding Scholarship (internal or external candidates). The Head has the discretion to award scholarships, e.g., based on outstanding GCSE results, to students who are joining the Sixth Form as full or weekly boarders. These are only awarded if there is sufficient space in the boarding houses.
Special Talent Award (internal or external candidates). This award will be presented to a student who excels in one area (linked to drama, music or sport) to a high level i.e. competing at county, national or international level. The award will provide the student with a 2-year annual financial contribution of £250.00 each year towards lessons or equipment in the area of special talent.
All scholarships are based on a completed application form (available from the Admissions Department) and an interview with the Head of Thornton College. Applications must be received by March 31st 2017 for September 2017 entry.
Scholarship interviews will take place during the first week back after the Easter holiday.
