School Grounds General

Our keen ornithologists in Dr Parker’s ‘College Watch’ group have put up a new nest box in Thornton’s grounds as part of National Nest Box Week.

National Nest Box Week is an annual event that takes place every year from the 14th to 21st February. It has been running for 20 years and is now an important part of the ornithological calendar. St Valentine's Day was chosen for the start of National Nest Box Week as this is the traditional date when birds pair up for the new breeding season.

Thornton has several feeding stations around the grounds, enabling students and staff alike to enjoy watching woodpeckers and nuthatches feed each day, alongside blue tits, coal tits, green finches and many other species.
