Congratulations to Thornton’s very own Annie K on winning the Children's Female Solo at the IDO World Tap Dance Championships held in Riesa, Germany last week. What an amazing achievement!
Over 1,300 dancers from 32 nations competed in the championships in various categories.
Annie started dancing at Myra Tiffin Performing Art School (MTPAS) in Stony Stratford age four and discovered a love of tap.
Whilst taking part in a class at Move It (a large dance convention), Annie was scouted by Tap Attack and invited to attend an audition.
Annie was successful in her audition and joined Tap Attack at age nine where she did regular extra training in tap with some of the best tappers in the country. Jo Scanlan from Tap Attack is responsible for auditioning and training the national team who compete every year at the World Championships.
From the end of the summer holidays, Annie’s parents have taken her to Swindon every weekend for intensive training. She rehearsed her solo at home on a very noisy wooden bedroom floor and in the MTPAS studio.
At the championships, Annie progressed through several rounds to the final where she competed against six other finalists, winning the gold medal!
Great Britain had never had a female champion in any age group so it was very special for the whole team when Annie won gold, with lots of tears from coaches, choreographers, teammates, supporters and, not least, her very proud family.
Well done, Annie. Everyone at Thornton is delighted by your success.
