Students received their GCSE results today and were clearly not deterred by this new system of harder examinations! They were jumping for joy with their results and rightly so!
Thornton students have continued to achieve record results – almost certainly placing the school among the top non-selective schools in the UK again this year. Under the biggest shake-up of exams in England for a generation, traditional A* to G grades have been replaced with a 9 to 1 system, with 9 the highest mark. Students across the UK have been graded under the new system for English Literature, English Language and Maths, while the rest of their subjects have been marked under the old A* to G grades.
The grading switch, part of wider reforms designed to make GCSEs more rigorous and challenging, has been introduced in a bid to allow more differentiation between students, particularly among the brightest and Thornton has excelled. The overall pass rate is 100% with 96% of grades A*- C and 75% of grades at A* – B (equivalent to 9 - 6). Several students achieved A*/A (equivalent 9 - 7) across all subjects including the aspirational ‘9’ in English and Mathematics. We had a lot to celebrate this morning!
Congratulations to everyone and thank you to parents and guardians for all of their support!
