Carnival music rings out across the school grounds.
In Music lessons, Year 7s have begun a unit on samba as they build up their knowledge of different musical genres and sounds. Sitting her class in a circle in the grounds, Mrs Broad introduced the students to different samba rhythms during a workshop in which they gained a practical understanding of terms such as Polyrhythm and Call and Response.
With drums, claves, maracas, tambourines and agogo bells to hand, the girls used traditional samba instruments to create their own rhythmic patterns with a given pulse.
Working together as a band, they played out four-beat rhythms and layered their sounds. They also tried to introduce syncopation to change the direction of their compositions to give them a typical carnivalesque feel.
