Year 8s follow in the footsteps of Kipling.
In English lessons, Year 8 students are currently studying a range of non-fiction and poetry texts related to or themed around journeys.
They began with Rudyard Kipling’s The Explorer. After reading the beginning of the poem with the class, Mrs Coates asked the girls to work in groups and ‘perform’ the poem to get a better feel for its rhyme and rhythm. ‘it’s energetic,’ she advised them, ’it’s about the excitement of travel.’
The idea was for the groups to capture this energy and convey it through a series of actions and the tone of their voices during their recitals – a feat they pulled off with style and a great deal of verve.
