Year 9s undertake a food testing practical.
Year 9s are currently studying a module on Organisation and the Digestive System in their Biology classes. A required element is to gain an understanding of food testing to lay down the foundations for future work at GCSE level.
This week, the students carried out a practical experiment in the lab, testing food for sugars, starch, protein and fats. They began with five products: glucose solution, potato, milk, cheese and olive oil.
To these test tube samples they added reagents such as iodine and Biuret solution and made a note of the colour changes which indicated if a particular food type was present.
