Local book illustrator talks to students about the inspiration behind her children’s book on refugees.
Thornton’s Prep School children were thrilled to receive an unexpected visit by a local children’s writer and illustrator this week.
Leighton Buzzard-based book illustrator Kate Milner won Student of the Year at the V&A Illustration Awards in 2016. Her new children’s book, My Name is Not Refugee, is due for release this May.
She talked to Years 3 and 4 how her book came about through her desire to help refugees in the best way she was able – by writing and drawing about what they must be experiencing, cast adrift in a new country with a different culture, language and food.
Kate answered a barrage of questions from the students who were very excited to be able to talk to a real-life author. They also learnt how she grew her idea into a story, from early pencil illustrations through to securing a publisher and seeing her work in print.
