How much energy comes from burning fuels?
In Science, Year 7 students have been burning different fuels to establish that some fuels release more energy than others.
The girls compared two different fuels, heating the same volume of water first with meths and then with a tea light candle. They timed which was the most effective – which fuel raised the water temperature by the highest over the same period.
By the end of the experiment they were also in a position to illustrate the independent variable in the experiment (what was deliberately changed) and the dependent variable (what was measured) when they drew a bar chart to show the differences in fuel types.
