Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service pay educational visit to Thornton.
The children in Reception and Nursery have been learning about ‘people who help us’ over the past few weeks. The school’s postman and nurse have already visited the boys and girls to talk about their jobs. This morning, we were delighted to welcome firefighters from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.
They talked about how they and the police and ambulance services aid the local community and asked pupils whether they knew the special number to dial in the event of an emergency, and also whether they knew their home addresses off by heart.
After showcasing the special clothes a firefighter wears – from a flash hood to shiny goggles for eye protection – the group sang a safety song together:
'Matches, matches never touch
They will hurt you very much'.
It was then time to go outside and see a fire engine at close quarters, looking at its four ladders, buckets, tools and fans and finishing the hour-long visit with each child taking hold of a hose and firing a torrent of water into the air.
