Senior students take part in friendly debating competition with Akeley Wood.
Seven Thornton students from Years 10 and 11 visited Akeley Wood School on Tuesday 11th October to participate in their first debating event of the year.
The friendly competition saw students working in mixed teams, arguing for or against a series of motions. These included: ‘This house believes that terrorism can be justified’; ‘This house believes that women should stay at home to care for their children; and ‘This house believes we should ban human cloning’.
The varied and challenging subject matter led to wide-ranging, powerful discussions, with students impressing judges with their composure, confidence and powers of rhetoric.
All the students from Akeley were Sixth Formers. This gave the Thornton students an excellent opportunity to work with more experienced debaters and the girls certainly rose to the challenge, says Miss Arratoon. More events with Akeley Wood are planned for later in the year.
