Academic Year 9

Senior students learn the reduction technique in Art class.

Mrs White is teaching Thornton’s Year 9s how to work with charcoal and chalk to produce features of the face.

Introducing the girls to the ‘reduction technique’ she demonstrated how to draw in reverse, so to speak, by totally covering a sheet of paper with charcoal first and then using rubber and pastel to draw the light back in.

The class followed her instructions to draw noses and ears, using their peers as models. Taking the method another step further, their homework was to produce a feature of the face using either make-up, ketchup, mustard, gravy powder, coffee or tea.
