Prep School students and Year 12s benefit from one-to-one reading time.

It’s been lovely to see the Prep School students reading to and getting advice from our Year 12s. The Sixth Formers are gaining invaluable practise in working with younger students before they start a series of volunteering initiatives.

One of the first is to visit a local school, St Mary Magdalene Catholic Primary School, on a weekly basis to hear readers and mentor the children. The aim is to enthuse the pupils with a love of literature and work alongside the school to raise money for new books. By being involved in what type of books to buy and by helping with the fundraising, the idea is that the children will become more engaged in reading.

‘Our Sixth Formers are already buzzing with fundraising ideas,’ says Mrs Scott, Thornton’s Employment and Enterprise Advisor. She adds: ‘Not only does volunteering provide our pupils with an invaluable professional skill set but it also sits perfectly with our ethos at Thornton of community and giving something back.’
