Year 12 Academic

Pupils carry out practical tests as part of their biological molecules unit.

In practical experiments, our A Level biologists have been performing chemical experiments to identify the presence of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids in a variety of foods.

With milk, cereal, egg, potato and cheese to analyse, Mr Matanda guided the students through the Benedict’s test to establish whether the different foods had sugar content. Similarly, they learnt that the Biuret test turned the sample lilac if protein was present. During the Ethanol emulsion test, the sample became a cloudy white emulsion to indicate the presence of lipids.

These hands-on experiments are part of a required biological molecules unit for Year 12s.
