Year 7s explore different genres of poetry.
Year 7 girls are currently studying different genres of poetry. This week, they’ve written some fantastic poems on the sun, moon, snails! and thunderstorms using similes and metaphors. They’ve also read and listened to a selection of raps by Benjamin Zephaniah. He is included in The Times list of Britain’s top 50 post-war writers and specialises in dub poetry, a form of West Indian performance poetry.
It’s made the students open their eyes to the fact that poetry doesn’t necessarily have to be written in standard English, leading them on to creating their own rap-like dub poetry about school life as they see it.
