We are delighted to announce that Dr Louise Shaw will join us as our new Deputy Head in January 2017.
Dr Louise Shaw graduated with a BA Hons and MA in History from Girton College, Cambridge University. Following her undergraduate degree, she was awarded her PhD from King’s College, London. Dr Shaw has lectured at the Institute of Historical Research and has published articles for the Diplomacy and Statecraft Journal as well as for the Rhodes Foundation Project. Her PhD thesis, ‘The British Political Elite and the Soviet Union, 1937 – 1939’ was published by Frank Cass.
Following her Junior Research Fellowship from Oxford University, Dr Shaw began her teaching career at the academically renowned Godolphin and Latymer School in London. She was an examiner for both the A level and IB programmes and successfully supported students applying to Oxford and Cambridge Universities as well as Ivy League Universities in the United States of America. She coached the Senior Debating squad in both parliamentary and English Speaking Union Debating and towards the end of her career there undertook the role of Deputy Head of Sixth Form. In 2009, Dr Shaw moved to New Hall School. She was soon after nominated for a National Teaching Award and was promoted to Oxbridge Co-ordinator and later Director of Learning and Teaching. At New Hall School, Dr Shaw’s Oxbridge Programme has resulted in significant success across a range of subjects. She has led one of the school’s most successful academic departments and in 2015, 100% of History IGCSE students achieved A*-A. Dr Shaw is passionate about holistic education; she is a firm believer that every child can achieve and that the role of a school is to ensure that all achieve their full potential.
Dr Shaw is married to Glenn, an Employment Law Solicitor and has two daughters, Rhiannon and Bethan who will also be joining Thornton College in January. She is a classically trained ballet dancer but in more recent years likes to run to keep fit. She enjoys travelling with her family and learning languages; she is currently learning Italian in preparation for their travels next year.
