All Seniors Senior School

Senior Physics students have been investigating the effect of surface area on velocity.

Year 11s took to Central Hall to see how the surface area of different-sized parachutes affected their terminal velocity. The girls timed how long it took the chutes to descend 6.1 metres from the top of the staircase and used their results to work out the velocity. Back in the classroom, they draw a graph of the parachute area versus velocity.

Year 9s carried out a similar experiment in the quad with Mr Badiko dropping shutes with different surface areas from a first floor window while the girls timed their descent. They discovered that the larger the surface area the slower the parachute fell.
