This week’s lunchtime Science Club had some of Thornton’s Year 4s to Year 6s sharpening their investigative skills to discover how to produce the optimum water cannon.

Just as a scientist carrying out this experiment would check out a number of variables, Mr Smith invited the girls to trial different methods to get their shoots of water to travel the furthest they possibly could.

Out in the grounds, they aimed their cannons high and low, filled them half-full and full, and applied different amounts of pressure. The goal was to make their water jet travel further than Mr Smith’s. His best distance was 14 metres and they beat him – just.
