The Typical Day of a Boarder at Thornton

(written by Year 11 boarder Freya)

7:15am - I am woken up by my boarding matron and I have thirty minutes to shower (if I want to. I can also shower in the evenings) and get dressed in my school uniform. Five minutes before the breakfast bell, our matron comes round to check that we are almost ready.

7:45am  - The bell goes for breakfast. I check to see whether it is my turn to take the laundry, and if it is, I take the laundry down, otherwise I meet my friends and we go down to breakfast.

8:00 - 8:45am - After breakfast,  I get ready for school. I clean my teeth and make sure my room is tidy.  I pack my school books and then I go to registration.

9:00 - 10:35am - After registration, lessons start and continue until break.  Break lasts for twenty-five minutes.

11:00 - 1:00pm - Lessons throughout mid-morning. Lunch is at 1:00pm for seniors. I usually eat lunch with my friends but sometimes I have a late lunch  because lunch periods are crammed full of activities and extra-curricular lessons. As a Year 11 pupil, I also have prefect duty for half an hour during Wednesday lunchtime. Lunch lasts for an hour and a half.

2:15 - 3:45pm - Lessons for the rest of the afternoon. At 3:50pm I go to register with my form.

4:00pm - School finishes for the day. I go to tea with my friends in the dining room. For tea we usually have juice and biscuits or cakes made by the catering staff.

4:00 - 4:45pm - I have a break until study. Sometimes I read or talk to my friends. I also take part in after school sports clubs. In the winter I play badminton with my friends and in the summer we play tennis. I also enjoy athletics.

4:45 - 6:15pm - During this time I have private study in my room until supper.

6:15pm - Supper in the dining room.

After supper we are allowed access to the ICT rooms for e-mailing. There are also three common rooms within the boarding area for us to use for games, television and relaxing. All Boarding areas have incoming and outgoing telephones for us to phone home.

7:00 - 8:00pm - I have study in my room or in the ICT room if I need to use the computer.

8:00 - 10:15pm - I am free for the rest of the evening if I have finished all my homework. I phone home at around 9:00pm. The rest of the evening I spend with my friends or in the ICT room.

10:15pm - I am ready for bed and it is time for lights out. My housemistress comes round and turns our lights out and makes sure everyone is in bed and happy.

"In boarding,  everyone is willing to make friends and support you. I have made friends from all four corners of the world and learnt a lot about their countries and cultures."
