ICT Suites

We have two superbly equipped ICT suites in addition to the ICT facilities in teaching rooms. One suite is specifically used for the teaching of ICT as a subject, which is taught from Year 7 and an option for GCSE.

A new ICT suite is in the St Clare building and is for Prep School use. Prep teachers use the facility to enhance subject teaching in addition to teaching ICT skills.

Almost all teaching rooms now have SmartBoard technology. These are interactive whiteboards which allow greater scope for engaging pupils with varied learning styles, particularly girls who respond better to visual and kinsthetic (or tactile) learning.

The Chapel

The Chapel is very much the heart of the School both in its location and its importance in the day to day life of the School.

The Chapel is always open and everyone is welcome. It is used for Junior assemblies and year group assemblies as well as a haven for quiet reflection and prayer.

The Chapel is within one of the oldest parts of the School which was built in the 14th Century. It was the banqueting hall before it was consecrated when the Manor House was purchased by the Sisters in 1917. The old fire place is now the alter and the original minstrel’s gallery remains.

Sports Facilities

Thornton has excellent indoor and outdoor sports and games facilities. Within the 26 acres of grounds there are:

  • Hockey pitches
  • Netball courts
  • A state of the art Astroturf,
  • Eight tennis courts,
  • A running track and long jump,
  • A heated swimming pool and a huge sports hall.
  • A spacious Sports Hall which is beautifully equipped. In addition to a wide range of gymnastics equipment it has climbing equipment and is marked out for all major sports.

The Grounds

The School is set within 26 acres of beautiful grounds. The School’s history as a manor house affords us the luxury of having a walled garden, an ancient orchard and beautifully landscaped lawns.

Our extensive grounds are used daily by all age groups. In addition to the woodland walks taken by the nursery and Early Years children, boarders go apple scrumping and damson picking and girls take a keen interest in the bird population. We now monitor one of the bird boxes with CCTV.

On Fridays there is Gardening Club and pupils are always collecting leaves and specimens for projects or lessons from the grounds. The buildings and the grounds are also perfect subjects for art and some staff opt to take lessons outside during the summer months.

Expressive Arts Studio

A superb Expressive Arts Studio was developed in the centre of the School in what was a former courtyard area. Opened by Bonnie Langford in 2008, the suite is now in constant use for dance, drama and PE.

The sprung wooden floor and excellent sound system also makes it the perfect venue for small music and dance performances and tea-time concerts.  In addition to the Expressive Arts Studio we have a ballet studio and green room.

St.Clare Building

The St Clare Building was opened in March 2010 by BBC nature and wildlife presenter Mike Dilger.

The ground floor houses Junior classrooms and a Junior ICT Suite and the first floor houses four laboratories, one for Junior Science teaching and one each for Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Every laboratory and teaching room has the latest SmartBoard technology and direct access to the internet. These facilities support our dedicated and experienced science specialists in delivering the teaching of science to all pupils aged 5 - 16.

The Thevenet Wing

The Thevenet Wing is purpose built classroom accommodation which was completed in June 2002 and is home to our Early Years and Pre-preparatory Department (children aged 2 1/2 - 7).

The Early Years Department comprises of two Nursery Classes and one Reception Class. These three classes share a large playground with excellent play facilities and equipment in addition to a lawned cottage garden. The Early Years Classes have recently had awnings fixed to the outside play area which provides protection from the sun and more often from the showers!

The Early Years and Year 1 and 2 classrooms are large and bright and have all the latest SmartBoard technology. Each classroom has its own outdoor learning/play area. The Group Room is used for Early Years - Year 2 assemblies and events and for creative lessons.

The Library

The Library is one of the most beautiful rooms within the main school building and is well used by the whole school, from Nursery to Year 11. It is exceptionally well stocked for fiction and non-fiction and has a designated Junior School section with reading area.

Our full-time Librarian, Mrs Barnes is an avid reader and ensures that we have a regular supply of interesting new books. She knows what interests the girls and purchases books which will be well-read and enjoyed. Mrs Barnes is also a qualified teacher.

She takes Library lessons where girls choose fiction books to write and talk about and reads stories aloud to the Junior children. All girls have a personal libarary ID which enables them to borrow books. We use an electronic system which makes it easier for girls to reserve books in advance and to keep track of their borrowings. The Library is open before and after school and at break and lunchtimes and girls choose to spend time there.

The Careers Library is housed next to the main school Library. This holds an excellent range of literature on sixth form and university choice in addition to career information. We stock the latest prospectuses for local and national further education (A level) providers including state and independent day and boarding schools and colleges. There is an excellent Careers Education Programme which starts in Year 9 and makes full use of these resources.
